A UNIQUE NATURAL PHENOMENON

In March and April one of Denmark’s most fantastic natural phenomena can be experienced here in Ribe. “Black Sun” – when 10 thousand starlings gather at sunset in the March and dance a beautiful ballet in the evening sky before retiring to rest in the reed forests. They make the most beautiful formations form – and woe betide if a bird of prey should come and hunt the swarm, even more speed is required on the small wings.

The many starlings gather food in the Wadden Sea National Park’s large pantry before the large migration of birds heads south to avoid Denmark’s cold winter months.

“Black Sun” can also be experienced at sunrise when the starlings set out for the day to forage.

You can experience “Black Sun” very close, and at the reception we try to guide our guests as well as possible based on our local knowledge. But with a nature guide you can of course also experience the starlings very close and with the nature guide’s extensive knowledge of the Wadden Sea National Park you will be introduced to the unique wildlife which is exactly the reason why the area was chosen National Park Wadden Sea and on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

You can book Black Sun tours with a nature guide on the Wadden Sea Center website. You will meet in your own car at selected locations in Ribe, which will be announced when purchasing a ticket. Then we drive out to the flocks of starlings under the guidance of the nature guide.

Tickets must be booked in advance.
